A General Election looms, and for the first time in years the race in Mid Sussex is hard to call. House building is always a big issue locally, and as we post this we’re awaiting examination of the district plan, which seeks to concrete over large chunks of the countryside. So it’s bound to be an election issue.

We thought we’d make sure local people would know where the main candidates stood by inviting them to contribute a piece for our website, setting out what they think of the district plan, and in particular the proposal to build 2,500 houses in and around Albourne and Sayers Common.

Often, quite a few candidates stand, some of whom have no chance of being elected. So, with apologies to them, we’re concentrating on four: The Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens. We’ll post the responses: we won’t edit, and we don’t believe we should be telling people how to vote, but we do reserve the right to comment. And if they ignore us or refuse, we’ll let you know.

Here is the email we sent to each candidate mentioned above:

Dear Candidate,

We’re emailing you on behalf of WILD, a group of local people challenging the proposal in the Mid Sussex District  Plan to concrete over the countryside between Albourne and Sayers Common. We think it’s only fair that voters should know your views on the plan and in particular the Albourne/Sayers Common schemes, and so we’d like to offer you the opportunity to prepare a post for our website. We link to a number of local social media accounts, so quite a few people will read what you say!

The offer is this: no more than 300 words, please, no later than 5.00pm on Friday 7 June. We won’t tell people how we think they should vote, but we do reserve the right to comment on what you send us, whether it’s a post, a refusal, or nothing at all..

We look forward to hearing from you!
Kind Regards
WILD
